Library Family Learning Festival proves a success

Decorating a book bag, gardening, writing a song, listening to a story - all these events were part of the Family Learning Festival at Manningham Library held in October.

Over 200 parents and children came to the library to try the activities. The highlight of the festival was a family story session with TV presenter Ian Clayton.

Current visitors to the library have the chance to see a series of slide shows on the Grand Trunk Road, the most famous highway in the Indian subcontinent. Stretching between Delhi and the Khyber Pass, the GT Road passes through the homelands of many of Bradford’s Asian families. Bradford photographer Tim Smith and oral historian Irna Qureshi travelled the road taking photos and interviewing people along the route. The library was refurbished and extended in the summer to create a modern library which is part of the environment improvements taking place in the area. For information on activities and events at Manningham Library, please ring 01274 435353.

First STEPS Cohorts
Manningham to benefit from Future Jobs funding

Manningham and the wider Bradford district is to benefit from a national scheme to help people who have been out of work and on benefit for up to 12 months to access the labour market.

The Future Jobs Fund aims to support people who are long term unemployed, including those aged 18-24, find jobs that will last for a minimum of 6 months and be at least 25 hours per week. The work must benefit the community and it is expected that the fund will create 594 jobs across the Bradford district. Those on this scheme will benefit from valuable work experience as well as an employers reference at the end of the programme. Local businesses will also benefit from the scheme. Creating employment opportunities is a key objective of the Masterplan.

The project is being led by Bradford Council, on behalf of the Employment and Skills Board, and the partnership involves Aspire-I and InCommunities as key project management and delivery partners. The local lead is ABL (Action for Business Ltd), who are coordinating work opportunities. The scheme is intended to start in January 2010.
